Anderson Hernandez went 3 for 5 today and batted in the run in the bottom of the 9th to win the game. With Ruben Gotay injured, Hernandez has a chance to become the backup middle infielder. He is solid defensively at both shortstop and second base but is extremely streaky with the bat. In 87 at bats for the Mets since 2005, Hernandez has a .138 average consisting of 6 runs, 3 rbis, 2 walks, and 17 strikeouts. Though he has the ball better every year going from a .056 to .152 to .333. The 25 year old did bat .301 last season for AAA New Orleans with 84 runs, 42 rbis, 28 doubles, 5 triples, 5 home runs, and 16 stolen bases. He was the Mets starting second baseman going into the season just 2 years ago and made one of the best catches of the year opening day. If he stays healthy I would not be surprised to see him make the team.
