The Mets signed Deolis Guerra from Venezuela on July 11, 2005. He was regarded as the top prospect from Venezuela from the 2005 set of players eligible to sign. In 2006, Guerra was successful enough at Hagerstown to earn a promotion to St. Lucie as a 17-year-old. He is said to have good fastball velocity, depth to his breaking ball along with the confidence to use it, and the ability to be consistent. Guerra’s fastball was up to 94-95 mph in minor league camp, which is an increase of four-to-five miles an hour from where he was last season. He also worked hard on his curveball during the offseason, which lagged behind his fastball and changeup. Guerra is being compared to fellow prospect Fernando Martinez. Both prospects are about the same age, Martinez 18 and Guerra 17. They both are expected to become very good baseball players. Guerra is currently playing for St. Lucie (A). He pitched last thursday going five innings with no walks, 5 strike outs, and 2 hits.
